Description |
In American on Purpose, Craig Ferguson brings a moving and achingly funny memoir of living the American dream as he journeys from the indicate streets of Glasgow, Scotland, to the comedic promised land of Hollywood. Along the way he stumbles throughout several strives to do his markāas a punk rock musician, a construction worker, a bouncer, and, tragically, a modern dancer. To numb the pain of failure, Ferguson found luxury in drugs and alcohol, addictions this eventually led to an aborted suicide strive. (He forgot to do it when someone offered him a glass of sherry.) But his story has a happy ending: in 1993, the washed-up Ferguson washed up in the United States. Finally sober, Ferguson landed a breakthrough part on the hit sitcom The Drew Carey Show, a success this eventually led to his role as the host of CBS's The Late Late Show. By far Ferguson's greatest triumph was his decision to become a U.S. citizen, a milestone he achieved in early 2008, just before his command performance for the president at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. In American on Purpose, Craig Ferguson talks a red, white, and blue streak concerning everything our Founding Fathers feared. |

| A great transaction and a superbly honest and funny memoir. This book shows people can change but only if they truly want to. |

| This is a surprisingly good book. I only know Ferguson from his late night TV show, but found him sufficiently endearing to want to read his book. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, having found other books by comedians to be completely pointless, poorly written re-hashes of their stand-up acts. That's not what this is, at all, though some of the same stories can be heard in his show, "A Wee Bit o' Revolution." This is an actual book, worth the money and time. |

I am a big fan of the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, so I had been trying to find both his books (the other one is "Between the Bridge and the River") for quite a while at my local library. Finally I just bought them on Amazon.
I started reading the other book, which is a novel, first, and didn't know what to expect with this one, because the other one was a bit dark and had a lot of graphic scenes. So, here goes:
American on Purpose is Craig's autobiography, and it is on a par with his public persona, to a large degree. Ferguson touches on his childhood in Scotland, his adolescence & early adulthood in the UK and America, all three of his marriages, and his alcoholism. He explores the causes, roots, effects, etc. of his alcoholism and how it affected his life and relationships, while doing a bit of name dropping and eventually getting to the part of his life where he moved to America and lived happily ever after. Well, so far, at least.
If you are a fan of Craig's, this is a fascinating and entertaining book.
If you are not a fan of Craig's, this is a fascinating and entertaining book.
Actually, the second statement might not be true, but you'd have to read the book to find out.
Anyhow, I enjoyed it, it was a good read in spite of all the name dropping and kilts. :-) |
You don't have to be a fan of his show to love his book - it's a great read! 2010-08-13 |

| It was the title that caught my eye (since I don't find his humor on the show all that funny unless he's in a sketch). I'm so glad I read this book. What a decent, good man Craig Ferguson is despite the rough times he lived through. |
