I read part of this book back in high school, and I just bought it to "refresh" my French! It's such a beautiful story.... well worth reading, whatever your age!

That statement is hinted at on the back of the book.

And presumably, this is a children's book. It clearly isn't.

If you have the courage to read this book, if you haven't already, then good luck. The ending just isn't very easy to take, but this author really seemed to know what he was doing, so I guess it was necessary.

I AM a pilot (literally) that happens to live in the desert (Southern California). So I relate to the author on a literal level, but only up to a point.

The author is nothing less, in my opinion, up there with Socrates, Einstein, and other great minds. Yes, the book really is that powerful. It masquerades as a children's book, and therefore people that should have read it, haven't. It contains some secrets, all of which (I don't think) most "adults" will acquire on the first reading. One reading of it just won't be enough.
Customer rating is 4 of 5  Learned to read French using this book   2010-05-17
By Eileen G (New York, NY)
More than a simple children's tale, it was my first exposure to a deeper level of the French language. Simplistic on its face, the chapters could be peeled back to reveal existential philosophy. It made for interesting discussions with my fellow book club members who were learning French along with me.

I love the fantasy and the art work that is in this book. What bothers me is that this "children's" book uses suicide as an answer to the main character's problem. I can't help but wonder what negative connotations this sends a child before they reach the turbulent teen years.
